I just moved and put this together in a basement so decided to keep the very bottom open for now (might need that extra 2×4 for the middle shelf, but not sure yet). I used 3/4 plywood (decent smooth stuff) for the top and the other shelf. Mine is solid and has some good mass. It doesn’t bump or jar easily. I’m 200+ pounds and I can stand or sit on it with no effect on the table. I sank a few short drywall screws into the top so that it was tight.
